January 31, 2009, Ada, Minn. - Cross-country racers and fans were treated to sunshine and temperatures pushing 40° Fahrenheit for the USCC Ada 100 Presented by Yamaha this past Saturday, January 30. Riders competed on a 45-mile course that consisted of 1 mile of woods, 28 miles of ditch, 3 miles of field and road and about 12 miles of river.
The warm temperatures combined with ditches filled with snow and good snow pretty much everywhere else led to a seriously whooped-out, challenging course. By the end of the day a new race winner would emerge, breaking Ski-Doo rider Bryan Dyrdahl’s perfect win streak on the season in the FXR Pro 600 class.

There’s been a dark cloud over Ryan Simons’ head for the past two seasons on the USCC circuit. Crashes, blown belts and just plain bad luck seemed to plague the Arctic Cat rider. But on Saturday everything went right for Simons. Finally.

“I was nervous going into today because I’ve been struggling a little bit lately,” Simons said. “The first lap went awesome, the
second lap I crashed twice and I’m sure I lost some time. This win just shows how hard my crew Hector Olson and Cory Berberich have been working and Arctic Cat, Speedwerx and especially Fox Racing Shox have been a huge help figuring out how to handle the bumps here in cross-country.”

Gabe Bunke

As he usually does, Simons set a blistering pace, attacking the ditches and carving through the river sections. Polaris rider Gabe Bunke, who finished fifth in FXR Pro 600, tailed Simons for miles in the ditch. “I could catch him on the flats but he would lose me a little each time on the road approaches,” said Bunke. “He wasn’t even slowing down for the approaches, he was just flat out.”

The warm weather threw points leader Bryan Dyrdahl a curve ball as he and his crew struggled with clutching calibration. Dyrdahl continues to lead the points in the FXR Pro 600 class with Gabe Bunke 242, 42 points ahead of second place Arctic Cat rider D.J. Ekre. Ekre leads the Ryde FX Pro Open class, besting Dyrdahl by 41 points.

Ekre won the Ryde FX Pro Open race at Ada with Polaris rider Corey Davidson and Arctic Cat rider Dan Ebert coming in behind him. Ebert, fresh off winning a bronze medal in snocross at the Winter X
Games, also finished eighth in Pro 600. Another X Games competitor and bronze medal winner in Speed & Style, Cory Davis, finished ninth in both Pro classes. Davis’ sister Carly put in a stunning performance, winning the PowerMadd Women’s class besting the second place rider Jolene Bute by more than six minutes.

The United States Cross-Country Snowmobile Racing Association (USCC) is based out of Minto, ND and attracts more than 200 professional and amateur snowmobile racers to each of its events. The USCC series is North America’s premier form of cross-country snowmobile racing; it is the only racing organization that sanctions events comprised entirely of terrain cross-country races.
